Three teenagers recovering from addiction occupied the stage in the Mashpee Middle/High School auditorium on Thursday morning, April 28. Before them was an audience filled with middle school students not much younger than them.

Adam Keith, Nick Gentile and Haley Smith are all students at Independence Academy, an alternative multi-service secondary school in Brockton that serves adolescents with substance abuse issues. It is there that they have access to counseling, support groups and health and wellness activities in addition to receiving a full high school education.
