About Us

Overview

Independence Academy is operated by North River Collaborative and our programs serve students from all over the southeastern region of the state. We are located in Brockton, MA and provide services and supports to students and families in over 30 different communities each year.

Our Philosophy

Independence Academy believes that a healthy adolescent has meaningful and trusting relationships, and is engaged in a process of personal, social, and physical growth and development. We believe that all adolescents, and in particular, those challenged by substance use and co-occurring disorders, benefit more from the identification and cultivation of personal assets to best facilitate their healthy growth and development.  We believe that assets are best cultivated by focus on these broad domains, also known as adolescent recovery capital:

  • Personal/Human
  • Social/Connection
  • Physical/Health

Our Team

Our team of passionate and experienced counselors and teachers is dedicated to supporting the holistic development of our students. We bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to provide guidance and mentorship, creating a nurturing environment for academic and personal growth. With our deep understanding of adolescent development and the unique challenges students face, we offer a customized experience for each individual student which addresses their social, personal, and physical growth. We believe that building trusting relationships with students is critical in allowing them to embrace vulnerability and to truly feel seen and heard.

Our Funding

Independence Academy is committed to providing cost-effective programming that is responsive to the emerging needs of adolescents. Our programs are funded by grants from the Department of Public Health and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. With current grant funding we are able to offer the Upper Course and 45-Day program at no cost. When students enroll in the Recovery High School, the sending school district is financially responsible. It does not cost a student or family any money to attend any of our programs.
