Our Philosophy
Recovery Capital
At Independence Academy we define RECOVERY as: being engaged in a process of growth and development in order to improve one’s health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and to reach their full potential. Recovery capital refers to the collection of internal and external resources that an individual can draw upon to be “in recovery”.
At Independence Academy we have identified 13 domains that we believe make up an adolescent’s recovery capital:
- Basic Needs (food, shelter, clothing, security/safety)
- Physical Health (sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress management)
- Mental Health
- Substance Use/Addictive Behaviors (i.e. gaming, gambling, cell phone use)
- Self-Awareness/Identity (self-worth, self-esteem)
- Emotional Regulation
- Commitment to Education/Purpose
- Connection to School/Community
- Family Relationships
- Social Relationships/Social-Awareness
- Vision/Goals/Aspirations
- Vocational Skills/Independence
- Hobbies/Interests
