Independence Academy
Overview
What We Do
IA first opened its doors in 2012 as the fourth Recovery High School in the state of MA with the primary focus on creating an academic environment for high school students looking to earn their diploma and who were also working a plan of recovery/sobriety.
Recovery High Schools provided the safe and supportive school setting for students who were struggling with their substance use.
Since then, IA has committed to being responsive to the emerging needs of the students, families, schools, and communities in the region. We have developed our own model adapted from the concept of Recovery Capital and which has an emphasis on overall healthy growth and development.
Our overriding interest is to engage students in a process of growth and development so that they can lead healthy lives of meaning and purpose.
As a result, recovery is central to our mission which is, “to engage students in a process of growth and development through which they improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.
The network of Massachusetts Recovery High Schools are DESE-supported, state-funded grant programs, operated by a school district or an education collaborative.
Licensed, highly qualified school-based personnel provide wrap-around services, in collaboration with school districts and other youth serving agencies, to support adolescents who have substance-related and co-occurring challenges while also providing appropriate academic support toward resuming a student’s comprehensive four-year high school education and equipping them to pursue a range of post-secondary options.
